Membership in the Association is limited to persons of good character and reputation who are qualified for admission as a registered member or a non-registered member in one of the following categories:


Registered

Professional Human Ecologist or Professional Home Economist

This category is for registered members who meet the educational qualifications and practice experience (work/volunteer) requirements set out in the Human Ecologist and Home Economist Regulation. A professional member may use the professional title and abbreviation PHEc, hold elective and appointive office, serve on committees and has voting privileges.

Candidate

This category is for registered members who have met the educational qualifications required for registration and are in the process of completing the practice experience requirements. A candidate may use the title Candidate Human Ecologist or Candidate Home Economist and is allowed to work in the field. A candidate may not hold elective and appointive office but may serve on committees and has voting privileges.

Non-registered Members

Non-registered members may not use the professional title or abbreviation PHEc but are allowed to work in the field.

Associate

An Associate member holds a degree in human ecology or home economics and has applied for membership in AHEA as a professional member, but is presently unable to meet the educational or practice requirements, or is an individual who has a degree in human ecology or home economics but does not wish to apply for registration as a professional member, or is an individual over the age of 60 who is retired from full time employment.

Members under the age of 60 who choose the associate category and decide to return to work at a later date and wish to use the professional title or abbreviation will be required to apply for membership as a registered professional and will be subject to the eligibility requirements at the time of their application.

An associate member may hold elective and appointive office, serve on committees except the Registration Committee, Practice Review Committee and Discipline Committee and has voting privileges on all matters except those that pertain to registered professional members and may use the title human ecologist or home economist.

Related

An individual who holds a diploma in human ecology, home economics or related field granted by a college or school of technology after two years of successful study following secondary school education. A related member may not hold elective nor appointive office, but may serve on committees except the Registration Committee, Practice Review Committee and Discipline Committee, has voting privileges on all matters except those that pertain to registered professional members. This category of membership may not use any title or abbreviation PHEc.

Affiliate

An affiliate member is an individual who holds a degree from a recognized university in a related field, and who by interest and activity is pursuing the objectives of the Association. An affiliate member may not hold elective or appointive office, but may serve on committees except the Registration Committee, Practice Review Committee and Discipline Committee and does not have voting privileges.

Student

A student member is a person enrolled as an undergraduate student in Human Ecology, Nutrition and Food Science or Education, majoring in Human Ecology at the University of Alberta or other Canadian University.

A Student Member may not use the professional title or designation, or hold elective and appointive office, but may serve on a committee except the Registration Committee, Practice Review Committee and Discipline Committee and does not have voting privileges.
